Honeysuckle: Named the “it” color of 2011 by the color gurus at Pantone, this fresh bright hue was chosen because “In times of stress, people need something that will lift their spirits.” Honeysuckle is a very energizing, dynamic and engaging color that can’t help but get the adrenaline going. A good color to ward off the “blues”! Designers have already embraced the color in their spring collections.
Color: Fruity lips and bright eyes. In keeping with the jolt of color we see with the honeysuckle trend, makeup is following suit with mega-brights for eyes — purple, yellow, turquoise, orange — the sky’s the limit. The red lip of fall and winter has softened for spring, but still is a long way from nude. Fruity, juicy shades are fresh, fun and optimistic and look great on all complexions
Statement sunglasses: We’ve loved oversized sunglasses for seasons, but now it’s all about making an even bigger statement with colored frames and uniquely-shaped frames — the funkier the better.
Structured bags: The ladylike look for handbags continues into the new year. It adds instant polish and is still reminiscent of that Mad Men style we love so much — retro chic with a modern twist.
Shoes: Fashion cynics have been trying to sound the death knell for the ubiquitous platform, but not so fast! Platform heels, architectural shapes and fun colors are still going strong in 2011.
Longer skirts: The age-old “hemlines reflect the economy” argument is debatable at best, but this season we’re seeing lots of longer lengths, and not just on evening gowns. Everything, from just-below-the-knee to mid-calf to floor-length, is making an appearance.
Seventies-inspired: High-waisted jeans, disco-inspired halter dresses, jumpsuits — they’re all back in style, and not just the spring collections, but also for designers’ pre-fall collections. But, don’t pull out your polyester leisure suits — this is not costume-y, but rather, the silhouettes are updated to modern proportions, so the look is more elegant than egregious.
